9 Reasons February 2016 is the Blackest Black History Month Ever

blackish.png

For a while now Black History Month has come and gone quietly, but something magical has happened in 2016. Celebrating blackness was reactivated. Entertainers and the media all stepped up to the plate and started showing that they too were tired and ready to use their art to show the world blackness and I have thoroughly enjoyed celebrating every moment of it. From Beyonce's Formation, Kendrick's grammy performance to ABC Family's sitcom Black-ish candidly addressing police brutality. In my lifetime, this by far has been the blackest Black History Month ever. Here are 9 reasons February 2016 is the blackest Black History Month ever:

1. Beyonce' dropping an unexpected song and video titled, Formation.

2. Beyonce's Superbowl half-time performance.

3. Charlamange tha God's Donkey of the Day, Tomi Lahren.

4. PBS Black Panther documentary.

5. Kendrick Lamar's Grammy performance.

6. Barack Obama's "Hey, girl," at the White House moment.

7. That one time black girls went to bat for Ugandan model,Aamito Lagum, when MAC cosmetics posted her lips on their IG handle, during NYFW. Double taps and positive comments followed the racist ones. #blackgirlmagic

8. When Virgina McLaurin, 106 year old woman visited the White House to meet Barack and Michelle.

9. AND my personal favorite is from ABC Family TV show, Black-ish. This the episode titled, "Hope", the family candidly have a discussion about police brutality in America.

7 Ways to Stay Productive During a Winter Storm

in-bed-chocolate.jpg

After having such a mild start, winter is finally here and for those of us on the East Coast, winter storm Jonas is expected to show no mercy. I don't know about you, but I actually appreciate when it snows.. during the workweek and a little part of me dies on the inside when it infringes upon my weekend. If you share the same sentiment as me; being stuck in the house after a LONG workweek could either bring about rest or CABIN FEVER and who wants that? I've put together a list of things you can do to stay productive, keep your mind busy and fight the feeling of being trapped inside during a winter storm. 1. Plan your next vacation What better way to escape feeling trapped than to daydream and actively plan for warmer days and excursions. Planning a vacation for me is always something that I throw together haphazardly until the night before. NOT GOOD PRACTICE -- it's worked out for me, but I want to be a better person. :-) Let's be better together and let's use this downtime wisely and find a flight deal, make a purchase, look up hotels and search the internets for bomb places to eat and experience while there. * just blew my own damn mind * btw I just scoped a roundtrip flight NYC to MIA for $78.

2. Go online shopping for your upcoming trip There is no better time to shop and peruse some of your favorite online stores and designers than when you have time on your hands. Although I must say that i'm guilty of filling up a cart or two from ASOS and Zara and never committing to an actual purchase, but LISTEN i'm trying to learn how to be more patient and less incline to want instant gratification. But hey,"you got's time ta-day", when you're stuck in the house during a winter storm and you're planning a trip, there is no such thing as instant gratification.

3. Clean out that inbox Whether it's Gmail, the photo album on your phone, computer hard drive or that thing you haven't cleaned out or organized in a while; clean that out. Don't feel bad i'm not judging you.

4. Read that book you've heard about Reading is such a forgotten pastime that isn't rated high enough, but at anytime the right book can be just the piece of entertainment or well of knowledge that can bless your life. What better time can you really get into a good book, than when a blizzard is outside? Well, I guess another one could be when you're chilling on the beach, but hey, the right book may just take you to paradise. ;-)

5. Update your LinkedIn profile With a new year, for many, comes a period of self-evaluation and for any of you who are on the prowl for a new job or you just want to see what's out there, being stuck inside during a snow storm is the PERFECT time to get your LinkedIn profile just as popping' as your IG, Tumblr or Facebook profiles. *take away tip: A manicured LinkedIn profile can bring recruiters from the company or position you're eyeing right into your LinkedIn inbox* click here for tips

6. Schedule your laundry I'll admit the for the longest time I was anti laundry service. Maybe it's because I've never lived somewhere where time SO precious. New York will make you re-evaluate your life and force you to figure out how you can be more efficient. And to be honest, 2 hours wasted doing laundry does NOTHING for me so not I delegate the task by using my new favorite delivery.com app. Let's just say they will pick it up and deliver it around my schedule. If you're not on it, create a profile and thank me later.

7. Watch a documentary Netflix, Netflix, Netflix documentaries are LIFE. *drops the mic* click here for a list

#CheersToTheWeekend - Your Rainy Weekend Guide

IMG_6909.png

Hi Everyone, I've decided to add a new weekly segment that's dedicated to sharing cool events and good places to eat. I'm all about lists and I'm trying to figure out a way to incorporate them into the blog  so I've decided to start putting together weekend guides. Welcome to the first #CheersToTheWeekend segment.  Now as my girl Erykah famously said, "Keep in mind that I'm an artist and I'm sensitive about my -ish", but if you know of any cool events coming up or have experienced good food please feel free to share it with tykia.key@gmail.com. I encourage your to please share your thoughts, praises and criticisms.

Now back to business...

Hurricane season is in full swing and Joaquin is coming for the East coast. I don't know about you, but rainy cold weather is a perfect excuse to warm up some cocoa or tea, get cozy and binge of tv. However, I know some of you may be little turn-up kings and queens and are not trying to be cramped up inside so I've put together a few things for you to check out.
