The holiday season is the perfect time to enjoy tons of holiday shopping, winter sports and cozying up with the ones that you love. But the holiday season is also a perfect time to get out and about and hit up some galleries to see some art. So on Saturday debonair Stephen and I had a playdate hitting up a few galleries in Chelsea to catch a few expiring exhibits and checking in to our favorite Ramen spot, ( mentioned in NYC best ramen spots list post ) Menkui Tei, to make sure the broth was still good. lol If you're in the browsing mood and would like to experience some amazing free art in New York; check out some of the artist's works in the exhibits and galleries listed below.

Derrick Adams: LIVE and IN COLOR

IMG_0095.jpg

DISCLAIMER: "Keep in mind that I'm a blogger and I'm sensitive about my ish.." I am not an artist and I have no formal training in the arts and I am not familiar with Derrick Adams or his previous works. I am simply a novice that attended an exhibition and this is what  I experienced while observing his work. Last night was Derrick Adams' opening reception of his LIVE and IN COLOR exhibition at the Tilton Gallery. I managed to get there a little early so that gallery wasn't packed to the max which was nice because I got to really experience the works without major distractions.

I personally thought the works were beautiful, raw and comical. And I felt that he did an amazing job at conveying every message loudly by using techniques of  incorporating mixed-mediums, collaging and using vidid colors. If I could sum it up and relate the works to something that I am more familiar with I would relate it to movies and television and I would say it had the voice of a blaxploitation film dressed up in the comical presentation of, the t.v. show, In Living Color.  I definitely experienced many nostalgic moments while observing the works and now while sitting here reflecting on all these things I wonder if Derrick Adams created this work to pose the question; Who is influencing who the media or it's subjects?

If you're on the Upper East Side for various reasons Tilton gallery is really close to the Whitney Museum, which is now displaying the Jeff Koons exhibition that everyone is raving about.  Maybe you can check them both out at the same time. I smell cute date idea!! Anyway, the Live and IN COLOR exhibition is at the Tilton gallery from now until October 18th and its totally worth blocking out a good hour to head over and check it out.

Happy exploring!

xxo,

A.Gamine
